In the ancient Yoruba town of Ilesa, in what is now Osun State, a boy named Oyewale Tomori entered the world on February 3, 1946 — as the thirty-ninth child of his father, a large-scale polygamous farmer. His father’s logic was simple and economic: more children meant more hands for the farm. Had history followed its quiet course, the name Oyewale Tomori might have remained known only to the red earth of Ilesa.

But history, in the guise of good governance, intervened. When the government of Chief Obafemi Awolowo introduced free and compulsory primary education in the Western Region, it was not merely a policy — it was a civilisational turning point for millions of children. Tomori’s father seized this opportunity, having little choice but to send his son to school—after all, it was free. That seemingly mundane decision would ripple across decades and continents.

The Detour That Became a Destiny: Veterinary Medicine and a Class Prize

Tomori was sharp. In secondary school at Government College Ughelli, a journey he made largely unaccompanied, crossing states as a twelve-year-old boy, he excelled in chemistry, physics, and the sciences. His ambition stirred by professional doctors was human medicine. Human medicine. 

But his final secondary school result fell short of the benchmark required for admission into human medicine. For many, this would have been the end of the road. For Tomori, it was a redirection. Not many students were clamouring for veterinary medicine, and so in 1966, at the age of twenty, he was admitted into Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria to study for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He arrived perhaps with hesitation. He left in 1971 with the DVM—and as the best graduating student, winning two major prizes. What began as a second choice became his first proof: that excellence does not recognise the door through which it enters.

A Decade of Ascent: Research Fellow II to Professor of Virology

He left Zaria on June 30, 1971, the day he graduated, and reported to work at the Department of Virology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, July 5—five days later, with a weekend in between. That sense of urgency would define the next decade of his life. Beginning as a Research Fellow II, Tomori threw himself into the science of viruses with uncommon intensity, pursuing his doctorate in virology at the University of Ibadan, which he obtained in 1976.

By 1981, just ten years after arriving as a junior research fellow, at age 35, he was appointed Professor of Virology at the University of Ibadan—one of the fastest academic climbs in the institution’s history. That same year, the United States Department of Health and Human Services awarded him its Public Health Service Certificate for his contributions to Lassa fever research. Two major recognitions in a single year, a decade into a career that had started with a boy who couldn’t get into medical school.

Resuscitating the Dead: Rebuilding a Department and Training a Generation

When Professor Tomori was appointed Head of the Department of Virology at the University of Ibadan in 1984, he inherited not a thriving academic unit but a collapsed one, a department that had lost its institutional momentum, direction, and energy. Where others might have managed the decline, Tomori rebuilt it from within. He reoriented its activities toward national virus disease prevention and control, gave it purpose aligned with Nigeria’s public health realities, and transformed it into a productive training ground for the next generation of Nigerian scientists.

Between 1980 and 1994, he trained more than thirty graduate students in virology and disease control, a remarkable contribution to a country desperately short of specialist scientific talent. Serving two terms as Head of Department, he was also appointed Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Arbovirus Reference and Research, and Director of the Postgraduate Institute for Medical Research and Training at UI. During this period, he was actively involved in isolating polioviruses from children presenting with paralysis at the University College Hospital. He did not simply occupy academic positions; he occupied them with consequence.

It was also during these years that he made one of the most significant scientific contributions of his career: the discovery and elucidation of the Orungo virus, a hitherto unknown pathogen, whose properties he characterised and officially registered with the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). This was not merely a scientific triumph; it was a statement that African scientists, working from African laboratories, could make internationally recognised discoveries.

The WHO Years: Building Africa’s Laboratory Architecture

In 1994, Professor Tomori stepped outside the academy and into the corridors of global health. Appointed as Regional Virologist and Laboratory Coordinator for the WHO Africa Region, based in Harare, Zimbabwe, he spent the next decade doing what only a man of his rare combination of scientific depth and institutional vision could do: building a continental laboratory infrastructure almost from scratch.

He established the African Regional Polio Laboratory Network, comprising sixteen laboratories across the continent, providing diagnostic support to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. That network became the forerunner, the proof of concept, for similar regional diagnostic networks for measles, yellow fever, influenza, and viral haemorrhagic fevers including Ebola. He was on the frontlines of outbreak investigations in Nigeria, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda, confronting Lassa fever, Yellow fever, Ebola, and Marburg haemorrhagic fever between 1995 and 2004. He did not advise from a distance. He went to the field.

Founding Vice-Chancellor: Institutional Leadership in Practice

After a decade at the WHO, Professor Tomori returned to Nigerian soil in 2004 as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University in Ogun State, a new private university that would require him to build an institution, not simply lead one. It is one thing to inherit a university with decades of history, staff culture, and academic tradition. It is quite another to establish one. Tomori did both, and the Redeemer’s University graduate who first sequenced the genome of COVID-19 in Nigeria bears witness to the culture of scientific rigour he embedded in that institution.

He served seven years as Vice-Chancellor, was simultaneously appointed Chairman of Nigeria’s Expert Review Committee on Polio Eradication and Routine Immunization Programme in 2004, and went on to serve as President of the Nigerian Academy of Science. Through all of this, he held firm to a philosophy of institutional integrity, the belief that organisations reflect the character of the people who build them, and that no institution can outlast the moral quality of its founders.

Nigeria’s Highest Academic Honour — and the World’s Recognition

The awards came not as a cluster of gestures but as a long procession of verified recognition. In 2002, Professor Tomori received the Nigeria National Order of Merit (NNOM) — the country’s highest award for academic and intellectual attainment and contribution to national development. He is among fewer than fifty individuals to have received it since its institution in 1979. The weight of that distinction is considerable in a country of over two hundred million people.

In 2012, he received the maiden African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) Lifetime Achievement Award, the first of its kind on the continent, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to laboratory science and public health. Then came the honour that placed his name among the most distinguished scientists on earth: election as an International Member of the United States National Academy of Medicine. At his induction ceremony in Washington D.C., his orator noted that he had led the development of the Africa Regional Polio Laboratory Network, described as “a vital part of the global polio eradication program”, and established a paradigm for laboratory networks across Africa that still stands today.

There is a certain poetry in the arc of Professor Oyewale Tomori’s life. He was born the thirty-ninth child of a man who wanted farm labourers, into a country that did not yet know what it was capable of. He was redirected by circumstance into a scientific discipline he had not chosen — and within a decade, reached its highest academic rank. He built institutions where there were none, trained scientists where the supply was thin, registered a virus with the world, and wept in public when his country fell short of what it owed its people.

He received Nigeria’s highest academic honour, the continent’s most prestigious laboratory science lifetime award, and a seat in the most selective medical academy on earth. He did all of this without leaving Nigeria for his education. He did all of this in spite of the systems that failed around him. And he did all of this because, as he has said, the country once gave him an enabling environment — and he has spent his entire life trying to repay what it gave.

For Nigeria’s youth, and especially those of the Southwest, his life is both a mirror and a challenge. The mirror shows what is possible. The challenge asks: what are you doing with what you have been given?
