Ondo State was created on the 3rd of February, 1976. Before its creation the State existed as the Ondo Province of the old Western State of Nigeria. Akure is the administrative capital of Ondo State. Ondo is bounded to its north by Ekiti and Kogi States, to its east by Edo State and Osun and Oyo to its west. Ondo is uniquely poistioned bordering almost all States of the Region.

Ondo is made up of 18 Local Government Areas: Akoko North East, Akoko North West, Akoko South West, Akure North, Akure East, Akure South, Ese-Odo, Idanre, Ifedore, Ilaje, Ile-Oliji-Okeigbo, Irele, Odigbo, Okitipupa, Ondo East, Ondo West, Ose, and Owo.
