Celebrating his 83rd birthday just two days ago, William Folorunso Kumuyi, widely known as W.F. Kumuyi, stands as an outstanding Nigerian pastor, educator, and author whose life and work have profoundly impacted millions worldwide. Born on June 6, 1941, in Erin-Ijesa, Osun State, Nigeria, Kumuyi’s early life laid the foundation for a significant journey in education, faith, and leadership.

Kumuyi attended Mayflower School for his secondary education, where he developed a strong academic foundation and began his career as a mathematics teacher. He pursued higher education at the University of Ibadan, graduating in 1967 with a first-class honours degree in mathematics and as the overall best student of his set. Following his graduation, he returned to Mayflower School to teach mathematics. However, his passion for excellence in education and dedication to teaching led him to further his academic pursuits. Kumuyi completed a postgraduate course in Education at the University of Lagos and, as a brilliant scholar, secured a position as a mathematics lecturer at the University of Lagos in the early 1970s. Yet, a deeper calling awaited him.
In 1964, at the age of 23, Kumuyi experienced a profound spiritual transformation when he became born again. This significant moment ignited his passion for ministry, forever altering the course of his life. Despite the potential for a flourishing academic career, Kumuyi felt called to a different path—one focused on spreading the gospel and inspiring deeper Christian living.
Consequently, in 1973, while still teaching at the University of Lagos, Kumuyi started a Bible study group with 15 students. This small gathering rapidly expanded, and by the early 1980s, it had grown into a large congregation that led to the formal establishment of the Deeper Life Bible Church. By 1988, the church’s membership had surged to 50,000, and it now boasts over 120,000 members, making it one of the largest Christian congregations globally.
Pastor Kumuyi is not only a leader but also a prolific writer and teacher. He has authored numerous Christian books and devotionals that have inspired and guided believers worldwide. Some of his notable works include “Daily Manna,” a daily devotional guide, and “Higher Everyday,” aimed at inspiring young people. His book, “Kumuyi: Defender of the Faith,” delves deeper into his theological beliefs and the core principles of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM).
His teachings and writings have inspired millions to deepen their relationship with God and live lives of purpose and fulfilment. His emphasis on personal holiness, biblical teaching, and evangelism has influenced the spiritual sphere of Nigeria and the world. Deeper Life Bible Church has become a major force in global Christianity, with over 500 churches in Lagos, 5,000 across Nigeria, and an estimated membership of more than 800,000 in Nigeria alone. Its missionary work extends to over 100 countries, leading to a significant media presence with radio and television programs broadcasting its teachings globally.
Pastor Kumuyi’s commitment to education is evident through the Deeper Life Bible Church’s numerous educational initiatives. The church, known for its community service and humanitarian efforts, provides various social services and operates educational institutions, contributing to national development. It has several educational institutions and a twelve-month Training Centre for pastors, evangelists, Christian workers, ministers, and soul winners. This centre admits individuals based on their credentials, irrespective of background, denominational affiliation, or ethnic origin, reflecting Kumuyi’s inclusive vision for education.
Pastor W.F. Kumuyi’s contributions to faith and society have been widely recognized. In 2013, he was listed among the “500 most powerful people on the planet” by Foreign Policy magazine. He received an honorary PhD from the University of Abuja in 2018 and was honoured with a Global Lifetime Achievement Award by a Christian body in Ghana.
His personal life has not been without challenges, but he has remained strong and undeterred. He married Abiodun Olowu in 1980, and they had two children together. Sadly, Abiodun passed away in 2009. In 2010, he married Folashade Blaize, who continues to be a supportive partner in his ministry.
As we celebrate Pastor W.F. Kumuyi’s 83rd birthday, his story serves as an inspiring example of how one person’s dedication to their calling can have a ripple effect across generations and continents. His leadership has not only shaped the religious landscape of Nigeria but has also fostered a spirit of service and spiritual growth that continues to inspire millions worldwide. His journey from a brilliant mathematician to a global Christian leader is a testament to the power of faith and the transformative potential of a life dedicated to serving a higher purpose.
