Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, born on May 11, 1926, in Uso, Ondo State, Nigeria, emerged as a prominent figure in Nigerian society, embodying the principles of service, integrity, and leadership found in traditional Yoruba values of Omoluabi. His life journey serves as a compelling narrative of dedication to education, unwavering political activism, and resilience in the face of adversity.

Reuben Fasoranti’s educational pursuits commenced in his hometown, where he attended a primary school in his village, Uso, before advancing to institutions such as Ondo Boys’ High School, Yaba Higher College in Lagos, and the University College in Ibadan, where he bagged a higher degree in English/Geography. His academic journey laid a strong foundation for his future exploits, particularly in education and experience in political leadership.

His career trajectory as a teacher in his alma mater Ondo Boys’ High School, reflects Pa Fasoranti’s commitment to education and service to his community. He later replicated similar educational and administrative services (as Principal) at educational institutions like Oyemekun Grammar School and Iju-Itaogbolu Grammar School, where he imparted knowledge and values to countless students. Even after retiring from formal teaching roles, Fasoranti’s dedication to education persisted, as evidenced by his establishment of Omolere Nursery and Primary School and Akure High School, reflecting his enduring footprint in education.

As a true Omoluabi, Pa Fasoranti’s political trajectory is deeply rooted in Yoruba ideals and principles. His affiliation with the Action Group (AG) and later the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), both founded by the esteemed Chief Obafemi Awolowo, marked the beginning of his political journey. Under the UPN party, he served as the Commissioner of Finance in Ondo State from 1979 to 1983. His tenure was marked by efforts to improve the state’s financial management and development, demonstrating his commitment to public service and governance. Pa Fasoranti’s alignment with Awolowo’s vision and his dedication to preserving Awolowo’s legacies positioned him as a stalwart within Yoruba politics.

His political exploits were not without challenges, as evidenced by the assassination attempt orchestrated by the oppressive regime of General Sani Abacha in 1996. Despite facing threats to his life while striving to liberate the Yoruba race from oppression and uphold the tenets of democratic governance in Nigeria, Pa Fasoranti’s resilience and fortitude remain unshaken, symbolising the spirit of resistance against tyranny and oppression.

Central to Pa Fasoranti’s political activism was his leadership within Afenifere, a prominent pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation. As a foundation member and key figure within Afenifere, Pa Fasoranti played a pivotal role in advocating for Yoruba interests, unity, and development. His tenure at the helm of Afenifere exemplified his unwavering commitment to Yoruba ideals, fostering a sense of solidarity and resilience within the Yoruba community.

Beyond his political endeavours, Pa Fasoranti’s personal life reflected his values of integrity and family. His enduring bond with his late wife, despite the challenges of relocation for his career, underscored the importance of love and companionship in his life.

As Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, OFR celebrates his 98th birthday, his legacy of service, integrity, and leadership continues to resonate the ethos of Omoluabi, inspiring others to uphold these principles in their own lives. As we honour his remarkable journey, may Pa Fasoranti enjoy good health, peace of mind, and contentment in the years ahead, knowing that his contributions have made a lasting impact on the Yoruba homeland, Nigerian society, and beyond. The Commission looks forward to celebrating your Centenary Anniversary.
