Roots: The Soil That Shaped the Seed

Southwest Nigeria has long been a crucible for some of the country’s finest minds — lawyers, engineers, academics, and visionaries who carried the intellectual pride of the Yoruba nation into national and global arenas. It was into this tradition that Olufunmilayo was born. Her father was an Anglican musician, a man of deep faith and wide vision who had been educated by missionaries and understood that knowledge was the greatest inheritance a father could leave his children.

Growing up in Ibadan, young Funmi watched her community struggle with inadequate healthcare. The memory of a young boy with rheumatic heart disease, a patient who might have survived with timely penicillin, would follow her for decades, haunting her with a question she would spend a lifetime answering: what if science arrived before suffering?

Education: From Ibadan to Chicago

At twelve, Funmi left home for St. Anne’s School in Ibadan, a prestigious all-girls institution known for its academic rigour and legacy of distinguished female professionals. She excelled in mathematics and physics, distinguishing herself among a cohort of only eighteen students in the advanced science class.

From St. Anne’s she proceeded to Queen’s College in Lagos for her A-Levels, where she exchanged mathematics for biology, a trade made reluctantly but never regretted. Her sights were fixed on medical school, and the University of Ibadan opened its doors to her ambition. In 1980, she graduated with an MBBS degree with distinction, the fruit of relentless work and the beginning of a much longer road.

After relocating to the United States in 1983, she completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, a sprawling public institution where the sheer volume of sick, often uninsured patients forged her into a physician of exceptional competence and compassion. She later earned fellowship training in Haematology and Oncology at the University of Chicago, where the laboratories of legendary geneticist Janet Davison Rowley would permanently alter the direction of her scientific life.

Professor Olopade’s career began in 1980 when, fresh from her medical degree, she served as a medical officer at the Nigerian Navy Hospital. By 1983, she had crossed the Atlantic to Cook County Hospital, one of the busiest public hospitals in the United States. For four years, she handled complex medical cases and quietly noticed something that would define her life’s research: the African and African-American patients she treated shared striking biological similarities with the communities she had left behind in Nigeria. Genetics, she began to understand, was not erased by geography.

In 1991, she joined the University of Chicago as an Assistant Professor in Haematology and Oncology. Over the next three decades, she rose to become Walter L. Palmer Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics, Director of the Centre for Clinical Cancer Genetics, Associate Dean for Global Health, and Director of the Cancer Risk Clinic.

Her most groundbreaking research centred on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, variants associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. While others studied these mutations primarily in European populations, Professor Olopade turned her gaze toward African and African-American women, a population largely absent from cancer genetics research. What she found was revelatory: African women developed breast cancer earlier, with greater aggression, and with biological characteristics markedly different from those documented in white women. Some 80 per cent of tumours in African women did not require oestrogen to grow, a finding with enormous implications for diagnosis and treatment.

Her patients became her laboratory. She ran family reunions to track hereditary mutations across generations, co-founded the Centre for Clinical Cancer Genetics at the University of Chicago in 1992, and launched West African clinical trials for new chemotherapy treatments. She bridged continents with her research, establishing a ten-point communiqué after the first international workshop on breast and cervical cancer in Lagos in 2004, a document that shaped years of subsequent collaboration between Nigerian and international medical institutions.

In 2005, the MacArthur Foundation named her a MacArthur Fellow, the so-called Genius Grant, awarding $500,000 in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to cancer genetics. She was one of only three African-Americans to receive that year’s award.

Her other honours include the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award; the Four Freedoms Award; the Villanova University Mendel Medal; the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON); membership of the United States National Academy of Sciences; the American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professorship; and the Order of Lincoln from the State of Illinois, the highest honour the state bestows. Though her career flourished largely in the United States, Professor Olopade’s commitment to Nigeria, and to South-West Nigeria in particular, has remained unwavering. In the 1990s, she returned with her husband, Dr. Christopher Sola Olopade, to introduce cancer genetics research to Nigerian medical colleagues despite early scepticism. By 2004, she helped organise the first international workshop on breast and cervical cancer in Lagos, advancing collaboration in cancer genetics and immunohistochemistry research.

Her work contributed to groundbreaking genomic studies on Nigerian women, revealing the high prevalence of inherited breast cancer mutations among African populations. The long-running Nigerian Breast Cancer Study in Ibadan helped position Nigeria at the forefront of global cancer genetics research and strengthened calls for early detection and equitable healthcare across sub-Saharan Africa.

Through these efforts, young doctors and researchers from Ekiti State, Oyo State, Lagos, and across the Southwest have drawn inspiration from her journey, seeing in her evidence that the distance between a small Yoruba town and the University of Chicago is not, ultimately, a matter of geography but of will.
