The DAWN Commission expresses condolences over the passing of Chief Ayodele Adebanjo, a nationalist and elder statesman, who departed this life February 14, 2025, at the age of 96.

Born on April 10, 1928, in Ogun State, Chief Adebanjo’s journey was marked by a commitment to justice, equity, and the advancement of the Yoruba people and Nigeria at large. His early foray into journalism, followed by a legal career after being called to the English Bar in 1961, underscored his dedication to truth and the rule of law.

A disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Ayo Adebanjo was known for his advocacy of true federalism, and a Nigeria of equity, fairness, and justice. He played a role in the formation and activities of the Action Group in 1951, serving as the party’s organizing secretary. His political activism, especially during challenging times, including his exile to Ghana in 1962, exemplified his steadfastness in the face of adversity. Beyond his political engagements, Chief Adebanjo was a preacher of restructuring and regional autonomy.

The DAWN Commission, and indeed the entire Southwest region, has lost a national treasure. We extend our condolences to his family, the Afenifere organization, and all Nigerians who mourn this loss. As we reflect on Chief Adebanjo’s legacy, we are reminded of his dedication to the principles of democracy, justice, and unity.

We pray God grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family the strength to bear this loss.
