In the early hours of the morning, a somber atmosphere enveloped Ondo State as the news of the demise of Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, affectionately known as “Aketi,” reverberated through the state and the entire nation. His passing at a German hospital marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy characterised by unwavering dedication, fierce advocacy, and transformative leadership.
Akeredolu’s life was intertwined with threads of legal prowess, political sagacity, and an unwavering love for his people. As a renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria, he fearlessly championed the causes of the oppressed, etching his name in the annals of legal history through landmark victories. In 2012, he transitioned from the courtroom to the political arena, contesting and winning the gubernatorial race under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner.
His subsequent victories in 2016 and 2020 attested to the trust and admiration he garnered from the Ondo electorate. As Governor, Aketi’s impact resonated across diverse sectors, prioritizing good governance, infrastructural development, and economic empowerment, leaving an indelible mark on the state.
Akeredolu’s unwavering commitment to security was evident in his successful establishment of the regional security network, Amotekun, earning him the title “Chief Security Officer of the Southwest.” This achievement, amidst challenges posed by security threats in the region, showcased his determination and political acumen. As Chairman of the Southwest Governors Forum, he advocated for Amotekun’s establishment, overcoming resistance from the federal government to ensure the safety of the region.
Amotekun’s growing success in Ondo State under Akeredolu’s administration mirrored his title as Chief Security Officer of the Southwest. The corps recruited thousands of personnel, apprehended around 1,000 suspects, intervened in 515 herders/farmers clashes, and prevented/resolved 37 kidnapping incidents in 2021. From May 2020 to September 2021, they impounded 26 cars and over 1,000 motorcycles, addressing a total of 2,633 security-related cases. In 2023, out of 7,000 hoodlums apprehended, 1,500 were prosecuted, highlighting Amotekun’s effectiveness in maintaining law and order.
He possessed an uncanny ability to connect with the common man, his infectious smile and warm demeanor breaking down barriers and forging lasting bonds. He was a man of faith, his deep Christian convictions guiding his every action and imbuing his leadership with a sense of purpose and moral compass.
Governor Akeredolu’s passing is not just a loss for Ondo but a national one. He was a true son of the soil, a compassionate leader, and a champion for justice and equity. His absence leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.
As Ondo mourns and the nation reflects on his life, one thing remains certain: Aketi’s legacy will endure. His spirit of resilience, unwavering commitment, and fight for a better Southwest and Nigeria will continue to inspire generations.
