DAWN Commission, the agency set up by the Governments of the States of Western Nigeria to manage the integration programme for the Region, has as a critical core of its mission the strengthening of the Region’s sports architecture as a foundational requirement for effective engagement of the youth, competitiveness and fostering communal relationships.
In furtherance of our mandate to foster regional cooperation and deploy sports as a tool for regional cooperation, it gives us great pleasure to announce that DAWN Commission, in partnership with the Southwest States Football Forum, will be convening the pre-season tournament dubbed ‘WESTERN NIGERIA PRE-SEASON TOURNAMENT' as a prelude to the start of the Nigeria Professional Football League and Nigeria National League.
The tournament is scheduled to start on the 2nd of December 2017 and would run for a period of 7 days at the Agege Township Stadium, Lagos State. A total of eleven (11) teams have been selected across the region to participate in the pre-season tournament. The teams are drawn from the Premier League, the National League and state representative from Ekiti. The teams are MFM FC, Sunshine Stars of Akure, Remo Stars, Crown FC of Ogbomoso, 36Lion FC, Akure City, Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan, Gateway United FC of Ogun State, Collins Edwin FC and a representative team from Ekiti.
The tournament would serve as a platform for the clubs playing in the league to assess the capacity of the teams, as well as adequately preparing the referees and match officials for the new League season. This would would serve as an appraisal and measuring tool for the teams on their preparedness for the new season.
The competition will equally play a valuable role in helping the players maintain a competitive edge, stay in peak physical condition ahead of the new season, foster better relationships between the fans of the respective teams, provide a synergy for football development programmes among the Western Nigeria clubs and provide an avenue for the discovery of young players in Western Nigeria.
DAWN Commission is indeed committed to supporting the aspirations of our States to achieve excellence in sports, as well as building effective institutions, as we pursue the regional development agenda. Working with our various partners along this line and especially signposting this aspiration by the partnership with the Southwest States Football Forum, we believe that our States are well on their way to re-energising not just Football, but the entire competitive sporting architecture for optimum result in a manner that promotes and leverages regional integration and sustainable sports and youth development.
